Master, you were right about one thing. The negotiations were short.

– Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Phantom Menace

Today year 2000 was the release of The Phantom Menace on VHS

The Phantom Menace: Episode I was released world wide* on VHS videocassette only. Two VHS versions were released a standard version and a widescreen Collector’s Edition version.

“The film is being released on VHS videocassette only and is not being released on the DVD format in 2000 or for the foreseeable future,” reads a statement from the Lucasfilm company.

But as we all know they later changed their mind.  The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film to be officially released on DVD. It was released on October 16, 2001.

In Sweden this day, year 2000, was the last chance to see The Phantom Menace in a theater. It was at the theater Rigoletto in Stockholm at 21:30. In the foajé we could buy the VHS for 120 SKr.
